Slaughter Discusses Economic Recovery at House Leadership Roundtable
Thursday, October 22, 2009

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, joined with Speaker Pelosi and her colleagues in House leadership for a roundtable discussion on revitalizing our national economy. Following the meeting she released the following statement:

“My highest priority is bringing jobs to the Western New York. Today I spoke with Speaker Pelosi and my colleagues in House leadership about the need to stimulate our economy not with a focus on Wall Street but with a concern on Main Street and the concerns families express at their kitchen tables each evening. Western New York has a proud history in manufacturing and we must do everything possible to restore that great tradition.

“While there is still work to be done, the numbers show that we averted an even deeper economic crisis, protected taxpayer resources, and put our economy on a path toward recovery. We’ve passed the stimulus package and I’m proud federal dollars are coming to Western New York already creating and saving jobs, rebuilding our infrastructure, and aiding small businesses. We’ve extended unemployment benefits and already eight banks have repaid their loans, plus interest, from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). So far, the government has been repaid $72.57 billion of the principal and an additional $12.05 billion in profit. We know that the road to recovery is long, but it is clear that things are starting to turn around.”

Slaughter was joined by Speaker Pelosi, House Leadership and all Committee chairs along with:
